Abstract

Dengen (Dillenia serrata Thunb.) is an endemic plant of Sulawesi especially South Sulawesi. Information regarding the physical and mechanical properties of dengen wood based on the axial direction and radial direction has not been widely carried out, especially dengen wood originating from Meli, Luwu Utara, South Sulawesi. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the physical and mechanical properties of dengen wood in the axial and radial directions so that it can be utilized properly. The method used in this study was a factorial completely randomized design, with A factor variations in the axial direction and B factor variations in the radial direction. Each treatment was repeated 3 times. The physical properties studied included moisture content, density and shrinkage. Meanwhile, the mechanical properties studied included MOE, MOR, and Fiber Parallel Compression. The results showed that the moisture content of dengen wood was 144.50%, the air dry moisture content of dengen wood was 22.58%. The density value of dengen wood ranged from 0.41 – 0.54 gr/cm3, radial shrinkage ranged from 2.29% - 6.62%, tangential 2.33 – 6.15%. Meanwhile, the MOE for dengen wood ranged from 82,806.99 kg/cm2 – 109,860.94 kg/cm2, MOR dengen wood ranged from 1,092.30 kg/cm2 – 1,285.84 kg/cm2, and the compression parallel to the grain of the dengen wood ranged from 274.360 kg/cm2. cm2 – 378.288 kg/cm2. Dengen wood belongs to strong class III-IV.
